Shrimp prices in the USA have been on the decline since the beginning of the year.
According to Shrimpnews, shrimp exporters are concerned about how long the decline will last. One of the largest suppliers in Indonesia is not sure when the bottom will be reached, but with global prices already “very low”, stocking of ponds for the next cycle could be severely hindered.
In fact, USA importers are asking for 10-20% discounts. Ken Salzinger, editor of Ken’s Catch, said, “Personally, I believe there has been too much production overseas and as such, there is a considerable amount of inventory not only in the USA but around the world as well. Rather than paying high overseas prices, importers are buying low-cost product to balance out their high priced inventory. To see how the lower prices are affecting the market...I visited several neighborhood supermarkets where shrimp is being discounted $7 a pound and sometimes even more.”
