In Kien Giang Province, as profits increase from rotating rice and shrimp, farmers plan to expand the model to 10,000 hectares.
During the nine-month dry season, farmers produce freshwater prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) for six months and white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) for three months, and then switch to rice during the three-month rainy season.
The model provides an average profit of about $13,200 per hectare per year!
Buyers come to their ponds to the purchase shrimp. Vo Van Sua, who has three hectares of land in Vinh Binh Bac Commune, said he earns a profit of more than $36,600 a year from his shrimp/rice rotation. In the past, his family farmed tiger shrimp (P. monodon), but did not always make a profit.
The prawns are sold domestically and exported to Cambodia.
