There are positive signs in shrimp export in the first months

In the first 2 months of 2018, shrimp export to Australia showed the strongest increase by 76,2%, reaching to 16,6 million USD.
According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, 10 largest import markets of Vietnam including EU, US, Japan, China, S. Korea, Australia, Canada, ASEAN, Taiwan, Switzerland accounted for 88,6% the total shrimp export turnover of Vietnam in value.
In the first months of the year, thanks to favorable weather, farmers have benefited of high shrimp production. Besides, high demand of global market and stable price also support famers and exporters. Shrimp export of Vietnam in the first 2 months reached 440,5 million USD, increasing 16,5% in comparison with the same period of 2017.
A positive growth was seen in 8 main import markets, except Japan. Meanwhile export to Australia climbed up nearly 76.2%. S. Korea also increased significantly at 40.2%. In contrast, because of high inventory, shrimp import of Japan from Vietnam deceased 38% in February and declined by 68.2 million USD in the first 2 months, equivalent 15.8% over the same period of 2017.
About products, white leg vanamei was the most important product in shrimp export product structure of Vietnam, accounting for 69.6% while black tiger shrimp and marine shrimp made up for 19,4% and 11% respectively.
Export turnover in value of processed and fresh/frozen white leg vanamei rise up to 28%, 29% respectively. Meanwhile, export of processed black tiger shrimp deceased by 38% and fresh/frozen black tiger shrimp declined 16% in value. Other dried shrimp showed the highest increase by 178%.
About markets, China was the largest import market of black tiger shrimp, picking up 69,6% and US was the largest white leg vanamei importer by 45,8 million USD in the first 2 months of the year.
At present, EU is still the largest market of Vietnam’s shrimp. In the first 2 months, export turnover to this market occupied 18,6% total shrimp export turnover. Export to this market reach 81,9 million USD, increasing by 11%. The 3 main markets in this group (Netherland, Germany, Belgium) all have double digit growth by 62.6%, 42,5% and 31,8% respectively.
Into 2018, EU market has positive sign to shrimp export. The main competitor of Vietnam, India have faced to threat of import ban from EU, therefore Vietnam may be chose as replacement. Besides, products of Vietnam have benefit from preferential tax GSP compared to China and Thailand.
US market has recovered after consecutive decline in 2017. Export to US in February reached over 75 million USD, picking up 6.6%. Because of this growth, US moved up to the second position in the largest import markets of Vietnam, followed by Japan with export turnover accounting for 15,5% total shrimp export turnover of Vietnam. Japan is the most stable market in the main markets of Vietnam’s shrimp. Vietnam companies have improved in products’ quality and processed procedures, which makes shrimp products more attractive Japan importers.
